Ask many residents of Central Virginia their favorite time of the year, and they will tell you without hesitating that it is autumn. The crisp, cool air; the smell of harvest and campfires, and the beautiful sights of multicolored leaves make fall a truly special time.

For visitors, residents, and perspective residents, the fall time also offers a wide range of activities that the whole family can enjoy. Here are a few of the highlights.

    • Enjoy the fall harvest at an orchard or a pumpkin patch! A great outing for families, or even couples, picking your own harvest offers classic fall time fun. Pickyourown.com offers a comprehensive listing of orchards, pumpkin patches, berry fields, and other harvest-related activities. Bring a packed lunch and a blanket to make a picnic!

  • Visit Richmond. The Richmond metro area is easily reached from the entire surrounding Central Virginia area, and it offers so many sites, sounds, and activities. Explore the colonial architecture and quiet, picturesque neighborhoods. Stop by a café or restaurant to enjoy a meal, a snack, or a drink. Alternatively, visit one of its many museums. (More on that right below!)

    • Visit a museum. Central Virginia offers a mix of warm, sunny autumn days…and cooler, rainier days. No worries, though—there are many great indoors activities to take advantage of across the state. Museums are a great starting place. Visit the Richmond children’s museum, the science Museum of Virginia, or head out to Charlottesville to see Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson. Last but not least, The Edgar Allen Poe Museum, also in Richmond, is a spooky Halloween time classic that celebrates the life of one of the greatest writers in US history!
    • Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier in Petersburg offers a unique experience that history buffs are sure to love, located in the heart of small town Virginia.
    • Enjoy a sporting event. Richmond, Virginia, boasts a number of fantastic college and minor league level sports teams such as the Kickers, the Flying Squirrels, and the Black Widows. Alternatively, a short trip to the nation’s capital will allow you to see NFL football all autumn long, as well as Wizards basketball in the late autumn, and National’s baseball in September (and, hopefully, in October!)

  • Visit a corn maze! Although Richmond offers loads of adventures in the city, you will never be far from nature. Corn mazes have always been a family favorite for spooky autumn fun!
  • Fall foliage drive. Sometimes a nice relaxing drive in the countryside is the best way to relax! Enjoy the sights of Mother Nature all across Central Virginia!
  • King’s Dominion. King’s Dominion is Virginia’s premier amusement park—and one of the largest theme parks in the east coast. Open all the way through the end of October, the park offers thrilling fun for guests of all ages!
